The Walk

One little girl. One BIG hope.

Little Amal, a young refugee, embarked on a remarkable journey – an epic voyage that took her across Turkey, across Europe. To get back to school. To start a new life. Now she takes her next steps beyond The Walk…

From July to November 2021, The Walk Productions and Good Chance in association with Handspring Puppet Company created The Walk: a travelling festival of art and hope in support of refugees.  The Artistic Director was Amir Nizar Zuabi.

From the Syria-Turkey border across nine countries all the way to Manchester in the UK, The Walk brought together celebrated artists, major cultural institutions, grass-roots community groups, humanitarian organisations and civic and religious leaders, united to achieve one of the more extensive, innovative and adventurous public artworks ever attempted.

At the heart of The Walk is ‘Little Amal’, a 3.5 metre-tall puppet of a young refugee girl. Representing all displaced children, many separated from their families, Little Amal travelled over 8,000km in search of her mother embodying the urgent message to the world “Don’t forget about us”.

At a time of unprecedented global change, The Walk was an extraordinary artistic response: a cultural odyssey transcending borders, politics and language to tell a new story of shared humanity – and to ensure the world doesn’t forget the millions of displaced children, each with their own story, who continue to be more vulnerable than ever during the global pandemic.

Amal means ‘hope’ in Arabic. There are tens of thousands of Amals, boys as well as girls, who need to find their way into education and to rebuild their lives. In the hope that we can help, we’ve launched The Walk’s Amal Fund, with our colleagues Choose Love.  If you’ve been moved by Amal’s journey please help young refugees like her find a more hopeful future.

In 2022 Little Amal will be walking again. For information on her next journey continue to visit this website or contact the team at The Walk Productions.
