Local Start Time: 19:30
Location: Chios Harbour
Little Amal arrives in Chios by boat. As she approaches the shore, she hears voices singing to her. The music welcomes her from across the sea. When she reaches the harbor, the local communities of Chios will welcome her with “Painemata”, traditional songs written especially for Amal, wishing her well as she takes her first steps in Europe.
The arrival of Little Amal is a celebration that connects tradition to the modern day. The “Painemata” will be heard in new musical versions set to brand new lyrics, provided by island residents from all generation, who are creatively retelling the story and journey of Little Amal. These unique songs are the fruit of an extensive workshop by the Chios Music Festival in collaboration with the Chios Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chios Music School, the Brasilionico percussion ensemble, and the young refugees who participated in the Chios Music Festival’s annual educational programme, as well as important local organizations and institutions. The final artistic result is the shared vision of director Yolanda Markopoulou, composer Lefteris Veniadis and violinist Olga Holdorff-Myriagou.
Our warmest thanks to Onassis STEGI for providing part of the set design.
